THE FLATS – Georgia Tech finished the fall ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation after winning a pair of events. Here are some notes and news items on the Yellow Jackets.
Golf World magazine has Georgia Tech No. 9 in its final fall poll after ranking the Yellow Jackets 7th in the pre-season. The Golfweek/Sagarin Index has Tech No. 11 with the 8th most difficult schedule and a 19-7-2 record against top 25 teams. Golfstat, the official ranking mechanism for the NCAA, has Tech listed No. 9.
Tech won two tournaments this fall – the United States Collegiate Championship by a shot over UCLA and the PING-Golfweek Preview Invitational, which it shared with California, the nation’s top-ranked team in all three polls. That makes 19 years out of 30 in the modern era of Georgia Tech golf (1982-83 to the present) that the Yellow Jackets have won multiple events in one year.
Tech’s highest ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index is Ollie Schniederjans (No. 39), who posted a 71.8 stroke average in 12 fall rounds, posted two top-10 finishes and an 84.3 winning percentage against all opponents. No other Yellow Jackets are in the top 100 – Anders Albertson is No. 112, Michael Hines is No. 128, Bo Andrews is No. 142, Shun Yat Hak is No. 212, Seth Reeves is No. 220, Minghao Wang is No. 250, Drew Czuchry is No. 259 and Richard Werenski is No. 339. To put this in perspective, there are 2,410 players listed in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index, placing all nine Georgia Tech players among the top 14 percent of Division I collegiate players.
Anders Albertson will represent Georgia Tech in the Western Refining All-American Golf Classic, Nov. 18-20, at El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas. The Yellow Jackets have been represented in this annual event, which brings together 24 All-Americans from the previous year, nearly every fall dating back to the early 1990s.
With Paul Haley and Nicholas Thompson earning PGA Tour cards for 2013 through their finish on the 2012 Web.com Tour money list, Georgia Tech will have nine alumni on the PGA Tour next year. Chesson Hadley remains No. 2 on the eGolf Tour money list with one victory this year. David Dragoo is No. 22 on the Canadian Tour money list. Dragoo and James White have advanced to the second stage of PGA Tour qualifying school.
