THE FLATS – Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura won their doubles match Friday, but it was the only win Georgia Tech would get as Georgia State shut out the Yellow Jackets, 4-0, at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
Tech (6-5) lost for the fifth time in its last seven matches after a 4-0 start, while the Panthers improved to 7-9 and snapped a two-match losing streak.
Benito and Segura, ranked 36th in the nation, defeated Robert Schulze and Sofiane Chevallier, 8-5, but Tech lost the No. 2 and 3 matches to give away the doubles point. Thomas Cook and Valentin Horvat outlasted Nathan Rakitt and Cole Fiegel in a tiebreaker on court 2, while Jannis Koeke and Eric Baum took an 8-4 win over Will Showers and Colin Edwards.
In singles, Baum put the Panthers up 2-0 on court 6 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Edwards, and the Panthers went up 3-0 after Benito retired with an injury on court 1 while playing the third set against Cook. Koeke earned the deciding point for Georgia State on court 2 with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Rakitt.
Tech is back in action at 12 noon Sunday, resuming Atlantic Coast Conference play against Miami at the Byers Tennis Complex.
