BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After day one of the NCAA East Regional Championship at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University, four Georgia Tech track and field athletes qualified for the next round of competition in the NCAA Championships.
Leslie Njoku continued her string of success in the 400 meter hurdles when she qualified for the quarterfinal round of the event with a third place performance in her heat crossing the line in 58.74 seconds. She will continue action on Friday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m.
Also automatically qualifying for the quarterfinals on the day was Antonio McKay Jr. who also took third in his heat of the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.56 seconds. He will continue action in the quarterfinals also on Friday but at 5:45 p.m.
Shawn Roberts’ 1500 meter run time of 3:49.74 helped him into the quarterfinals of the race as he crossed the line fifth in his heat. He continues action on Saturday at 6:45 p.m.
Joanna Wright, with her height of 3.85 meters in the pole vault, moves on to the National Championship meet, finishing third at the regional competition. Just missing out on moving on to nationals was Julienne McKee who came up just short of her career best jump in the long jump with a distance of 6.03 meters.
Both Mary Kate DuBard and DJ McMillan took part in the 10,000m run on the night. Dubard finished in 47th place with a time of 36:29.76 seconds while McMillan did not finish the race.
Four more Tech athletes begin action on Friday while Njoku and McKay continue action.
