NASHVILLE – Four student-athletes were recognized for Georgia Tech baseball on the 2021 NCAA Nashville Regional All-Tournament Team, it was announced Monday.
The Yellow Jackets were represented by Luke Waddell, Justyn-Henry Malloy, Drew Compton and Andy Archer.
Junior captain Waddell represented the shortstop position and was a lockdown defender all weekend. In addition to multiple highlight-worthy plays made in the field, he finished with five hits, a double and two home runs in the elimination games to lead the Jackets. One of the toughest to strikeout in the nation, Waddell didn’t strikeout in 19 at-bats during the weekend.
Representing the designated hitter spot, Compton was otherworldly over the last three games of the tournament, hitting four home runs – including one from either side of the plate against Indiana State – and two against Vanderbilt. He hit .412 for the tournament and slugged a whopping 1.176 with seven hits and a double to boot.
Returning to where his collegiate career began, Malloy led the way offensively, finishing with eight hits, a double and a homer to hit .533 over the four games. He struck out just once over the weekend, reaching base at a .588 clip.
In an elimination game with another game ahead of the team, redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Archer pitched a career gem for the Jackets. In Georgia Tech’s first postseason complete-game shutout since 2013 (coincidentally also at Hawkins Field), Archer was dominant, punching out seven and surrendering just four hits in nine complete innings of work.
