ATLANTA– – Georgia Tech seniors George Godsey, Sean Gregory, Chris Young and Nick Rogers were named permanent team captains for the 2001 Yellow Jacket football team, which hosts arch-rival Georgia Saturday.
Nineteenth-ranked Tech (7-3, 4-3 ACC) and the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs (6-3, 5-3 SEC) kick off at 7:45 p.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN as well as locally on WSB-TV.
Godsey, Gregory, Young and Rogers are among the 14 seniors who enter their final home game with a four-year record of 34-12.
“When you have a young football team, you’re looking for the chemistry of your senior class,” said Georgia Tech head coach George O’Leary, whose son Marty is among the graduating seniors.
“It’s a team vote, and all four are great candidates and I’m happy to name them today.” During the season, O’Leary selects captains for each game until the team elects the permanent captains prior to the final home game.
Godsey, from Tampa, Fla., is a two-year starter at quarterback who leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing this season with 2,631 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Gregory, a running back from Homewood, Ill., ranks among Tech’s career rushing leaders with 1,294 career yards and 16 touchdowns, including 837 yards and 13 TDs in 1999, when he was the team’s top rusher.
Rogers, from East Point, Ga., is an all-ACC defensive end who has 48 tackles, four sacks and nine tackles for loss this season.
Young, from Senoia, Ga., is a three-year starter in the secondary who played strong safety before moving to cornerback. This season, he has 46 tackles, one interception and a fumble return for a touchdown.
