Falconi Reaches Finals of ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships

Nov. 7, 2009

Singles Draw

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Georgia Tech’s Irina Falconi defeated Baylor’s Lenka Broosova Saturday to solidify her spot in the finals of the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

Falconi, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, continued her strong fall season when she defeated Broosova, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinal match. The Jupiter, Fla., native has now won all 11 of her fall matches and will compete for her second straight singles national championship.

“Today, Anca [ Dumitrescu] and I talked about a very specific game plan,” Falconi said. “It was a matter of me executing at the net, serving well and being in offense as much as possible. I had played Broosova before, which allowed me to have an idea of what she was going to bring.”

Last month, Falconi upended Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia to win the 2009 Riviera/ITA All-American Singles Championship. Falconi will try and become the first women since 1985 to capture the singles titles at both the All-American Championship and the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship.

“Being in a position to play for a title is always a great feeling,” Falconi said. It is going to be a lot of fun to lay it all out on the court tomorrow.”

Falconi will next face No. 4 seed Jana Juricova Sunday at 1 p.m. Live scoring updates for all matches at the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships will be available here.

In other Yellow Jacket action, Tech swept three singles matches and won two doubles matches on the second day of action at the Kitty Harrison Invitational.

In doubles, Krupina and Elizabeth Kilborn earned an 8-5 win over Yasmin Hamza and Emily Lauten of Virginia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets will close out their fall season Sunday on the last day of competition at the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
