Eubanks Receives Wildcard to U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament

Aug. 18, 2016

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The whirlwind summer of Georgia Tech men’s tennis rising junior Christopher Eubanks continues with a wildcard invitation to the qualifying round of the U.S. Open in New York City, Aug. 22-23. The Atlanta native will compete for a spot in the main draw of the prestigious tournament.

“I am extremely excited to be able to get up there and play in a tournament I’ve always dreamed of playing in,” said Eubanks. “I think for me, as an American, this is the biggest tournament of the year, and I am honored and excited to get up there and see what I can do.”

The 6-foot-7 All-American has already proved his worth this summer. He has competed in several pro-level tournaments, most notably the BB&T Atlanta Open earlier this month. Eubanks won the Wildcard Challenge to make it to the qualifying round of the tournament. He knocked off No. 107-ranked Thiago Monteiro to earn his spot in the main draw of the Atlanta Open. He also competed in the doubles draw of event with Zack Kennedy.

“This is an incredible honor for Chris to have the opportunity to play at this year’s men’s U.S. Open qualifying tournament,” said Georgia Tech men’s tennis head coach Kenny Thorne. “This is the biggest and most prestigious tournament in the United States and arguably the world. To have any former Georgia Tech athlete represented there is great but to have a current athlete competing is absolutely outstanding.”

The feat is outstanding; Eubanks is the first student-athlete to receive an invitation to the tournament while enrolled at Tech in program history. Eubanks is prepared for the challenge ahead of him.

“I’ve been practicing,” said Eubanks. “I knew there was a chance, so I’ve been training and doing a lot of on-court stuff to prepare and get my body 100 percent healthy in case I got that call.”

The qualifier is scheduled to start on Aug. 22. Eubanks will either play on Tuesday, Aug. 22 or Wednesday, Aug. 23 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
