THE FLATS – Eight former Georgia Tech football student-athletes have come to terms with National Football League franchises this weekend.
Three former Yellow Jackets — defensive back Corey Griffin, wide receiver Ricky Jeune and defensive lineman Antonio Simmons — will join the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, respectively, as undrafted free agents. Undrafted free agents have a spot on their team’s 90-man offseason rosters.
Additionally, five Georgia Tech alums — defensive backs Lance Austin and Lawrence Austin, offensive lineman Freddie Burden, defensive back Step Durham and defensive lineman KeShun Freeman — have received an invitation to participate in the Atlanta Falcons’ (both Austins), Cleveland Browns’ (Burden), Tennessee Titans’ (Durham) and Baltimore Ravens (Freeman) upcoming rookie minicamps. Rookie minicamp invitees do not have a spot on their teams’ 90-man rosters but have the opportunity to earn a roster spot with their performance in the minicamp.
With the additions of Griffin, Jeune and Simmons, Georgia Tech now has 19 former student-athletes on current NFL rosters. Forty-one Yellow Jackets that have played under head coach Paul Johnson have gone on to play in the NFL.
