Cross Country Heads to Berry College for Season Opener

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to begin their season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Berry College’s Watermelon Run. The men’s 8K race will start off the meet at 7:00 p.m. and the women will follow with the 6K race at 7:03 p.m. The races will take place at Berry’s 2K grass loop in Mount Berry, Ga.

Both teams concluded the 2021 season at the NCAA Division I South Region Championships where the women’s team placed ninth and the men’s team finished 13th. At the 2021 ACC Championships, the women came in eighth and the men finished 12th. The Jackets were led by former Tech runner, Nicole Fegans, who was named to the All-ACC Team after finishing seventh in the 6K race.

At the 2021 season opener, the Yellow Jackets dominated the competition as both teams achieved first-place finishes. James Cragin led the men’s 6K race and Nicole Fegans took home first-place in the women’s 4K race.

Tech returns this season with competitive performers on both teams. James Cragin proved to be a top runner for the Yellow Jackets last season, leading the men’s team at both the ACC Championships and NCAA Division I South Region Championships. The return of many seasoned upperclassmen will also add depth to the men’s team this season. Along with the returners, Tech has added one transfer from Fordham University and four freshmen to their team.

On the women’s side, the Jackets’ have promising returners in Liz Galarza and Sarah Copeland. Tech welcomes two transfers from ACC opponent, Virginia, and one from the University of Wisconsin. The combined experience of these runners will help the team as they work toward successful finishes at the conference and national championships. In addition to the transfers, the women’s team has added five freshmen to the program.
