April 17, 2013

MESA, Ariz. – Georgia Tech sophomore Andrew Chetcuti qualified for the 2013 Small States Games and the 2013 FINA World Championships in the 50m free during the Arena Grand Prix at Mesa this past weekend in Mesa, Arizona.

Chetcuti was clocked in a time of 23.60 in the preliminary round of the 50m free, which tied his own Maltese national long-course record that he originally set last summer at the Small States Games in Andorra. He also swam the 100m free at the Arena Grand Prix in Mesa, winning the D-Final with a time of 51.93 that placed him 25th overall.

His time in the 50m free was 11th-best in the prelims. He did not swim the finals, due to a previously-scheduled flight back to Atlanta.

The 15th FINA World Championship is set for July 19-August 4 in Barcelona, Spain. The 2013 Small States Games will be contested in Luxembourg, Switzerland from May 27-June 1.

Chetcuti also holds the national records for Malta in the 100m free (51.67 – set during last summer’s Olympic Games in London) and the 200m free (1:57.41 – set last winter in Dublin).
