Castro, Richard Honored at Peach of an Athlete Banquet

April 27, 2007

ATLANTA–Georgia Tech all-America golfer Roberto Castro and football standout Darryl Richard were among the “Peach of an Athlete” honorees at Thursday’s annual banquet sponsored by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Peach of an Athlete program recognizes collegiate and professional athletes who are positive role models.

A senior from Alpharetta, Ga., Castro is one of the nation’s top amateur golfers as well an outstanding student and leader. He will be a four-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and likely a four-time all-America while helping Tech to Top 10 national rankings each year and Atlantic Coast Conference titles the last two years. He has also captained the United States Palmer Cup team, and he will go down as one of the most successful golfers in Tech’s tradition of outstanding players.

Castro is also a two-time Academic All-America, an All-America Scholar, and an Academic All-ACC selection. He serves on the Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board and is active in the community, including Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and the Michael Isenhour Toy Drive. He graduates this semester with highest honor in Industrial Engineering.

Richard, a redshirt sophomore defensive tackle from Destrehan, La., also graduates next week, earning his Management degree with high honor in just three years. After serving an internship this summer with Manhattan Associates, Inc., he hopes to enroll in graduate school next fall while continuing his football career for the Yellow Jackets.

Richard is an Academic All-ACC selection and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. His volunteer activities include Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics as well as tutoring and mentoring.
