Buzz Places Second, Tech Cheerleaders Sixth at Nationals

April 8, 2002

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s mascot, Buzz, took second place in the nation at the National Cheerleaders Association Chick-fil-A Cheer and Dance Team Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., last weekend while the Tech cheerleaders placed sixth nationally.

Buzz entered the competition as the defending national champion but was dethroned this year by the Mississippi State mascot, Bully the Bulldog.

The Tech cheerleaders, coached by Michelle Cherwa, finished behind North Texas, Purdue, Louisville, Texas Tech, and NC State at the two-day competition.

In the partner stunt competition, the Tech duo of sophomore Pauli Turner and freshman Louis Darrouzet placed sixth overall.

The competition was televised by CBS for tape-delayed broadcast on Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. on WGCL-TV (Ch. 46) in Atlanta.
