MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Brian Burks tossed eight strong innings and Clifton Remole had three hits as eighth-ranked Georgia Tech (8-1) defeated Virginia Commonwealth (5-8), 8-2, in the final day of the Baseball at the Beach tournament at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Burks (2-0) picked up his second win of the season in as many starts after dominating the VCU hitters for eight innings. He allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits and one walk while striking out a career-high eight batters. Only one of the three hits he allowed left the infield. Senior Victor Menocal tossed a scoreless and hitless ninth inning to preserve Tech’s victory.

The Yellow Jackets took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Tech loaded the bases with one out when Matthew Boggs and Victor Menocal singled and Matt Murton was hit by a pitch. Tyler Parker drove in Boggs with a RBI single to left field while Jeremy Slayden plated Menocal and Murton with a single down the left field line.

Tech made the score 4-0 in the fourth inning after Brandon Boggs doubled and scored on Eric Patterson’s RBI single.

VCU cut the lead to 4-1 with a unearned run in the fifth. Jeff Parrish reached on Menocal’s throwing error, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Chris Gerrity’s groundout to second base.

The Rams made the score 4-2 in the eighth after Chris Garrity doubled and eventually scored on Matt Davis’ RBI groundout to first base.

The Yellow Jackets put the game away with our runs in the top of the ninth inning. Patterson drove in the first run of the inning with a single to right field before Jason Perry cleared the bases with a three-run double off the left field wall.
