GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla has been named ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading No. 14 Georgia Tech volleyball (17-3, 8-2 ACC) to another undefeated weekend on the road in ACC play, the league office announced on Tuesday.
With the recognition, Brambilla picks up her fourth career ACC Player of the Week honor and sixth total Atlantic Coast Conference weekly award after being tabbed ACC Freshman of the Week twice in her first season on The Flats. The Porto Alegre, Brazil, native earned her first ACC Player of the Week this season on Sept. 28 following Georgia Tech’s clean sweep of Wake Forest and Virginia Tech in its first weekend of ACC play. As a unit, Tech been awarded seven weekly honors on the year as junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann also owns two ACC Player of the Week honors while freshman outside hitter Bianca Bertolino has been recognized as ACC Freshman of the Week three times to date.
Brambilla receives the honor after fueling the Tech attack on the way to a pair of ACC road victories as the Jackets took their first win at Syracuse in program history before sweeping Boston College on the road. Brambilla was a force on the attack as she led the White and Gold with 43 kills for a gaudy 6.14 kills per set, including a team-high three aces, through both contests. The Brazilian bomber pitched in across the board on the weekend, also adding 16 digs and three block assists.
Brambilla kicked off the weekend by tying her season high of 23 kills behind a .341 clip, including an ace, to lead the team while pitching in eight digs and a pair of blocks defensively to power Tech over Syracuse. The 23 kills are tied for the fifth most in any match and the most in a four-set match amongst the ACC this season. Brambilla also totaled 25 points in the contest, which tied for the second most in a four-set match across the ACC on the year. The explosive right-side hitter led the team once again with 20 kills in the Jackets’ sweep of Boston College, picking up two aces while adding eight digs and a block assist as well.
On the season, Brambilla is top five in the ACC in four categories – third in kills per set (4.10), fourth in points per set (4.58), fourth in kills (291) and fourth in points (325.5). The veteran has tallied 20 or more kills four times this season as her 23 against Wake Forest remain the most by any player in the ACC in a three-set match.
