Benito Advances at USTA Clay Court Invitational

Kissimmee, Fla. – Freshman Carlos Benito won his first-round match in the main draw of singles Thursday at the USTA Clay Court Invitational, defeating South Alabama’s Manuel Beida in straight sets.

The Madrid, Spain freshman, following the 7-6, 7-5 victory, will meet fourth-seeded Florent Diep of Florida in Friday’s round of 32.

Meanwhile, Cole Fiegel and Nathan Rakitt dropped into the consolation bracket of singles with first-round losses, and also were defeated in the first round of doubles. Fiegel lost to Florida State’s Cristian Gonaalez-Mendez 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Rakitt fell 6-4, 7-6 to Tulsa’s Carlos Bautista.

Rakitt and Fiegel, a top-8 seed in the doubles draw, lost 8-6 to Notre Dame’s Kenny Sabacinski and Nico Montoya.

Fiegel continues singles play Friday with a match against USTA junior Catalin Mateas, while Rakitt takes on Pepperdine’s Kento Tanka-Tamaki.
