Anderson & Menano Lead Tech Men's Tennis on Day Two of ITA Regionals

ATLANTA — The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team continued its strong play with the beginning of main draw competition on Friday at the Omni Hotels ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C. The four-day tournament is being contested Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina, and is a qualifier for the ITA National Indoor Championships, which are the second major of the collegiate tennis season.

The Yellow Jackets opened the day in singles play of the main draw and saw a pair of player advance to Saturday’s round of 16 with two wins apiece. Tech sophomore Joao Menano continued opened the day with a first-round win over ninth-seeded Bence Hamori of American in straight sets by a 6-2, 7-6(4) score. In the second round, Menano defeated Wake Forest’s Trent Brendon in a tight 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 match. He will now face Pedro Nieto of VCU in the next round.

Joining Menano in the round of 16 will be junior Roger Anderson, who won his first round match with Alex Herrera of Florida State by a 6-3, 6-4 score. In the second round, Anderson, who is the event’s fifth seed, was again a straight-set winner, as he cruised past York Allen of Duke by a 6-2, 6-1 count. He will now face David Bere of Wake Forest in the next round.

Tech junior David Wright was unable to advance past the first round, as he fell to third-seeded Marcio Petrone of North Carolina by a 4-6, 5-7 score.

In doubles play, Tech’s duo of Anderson and Wright had advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw on Thursday, but were unable to reach the semifinals. The duo dropped an 8-6 decision to Wake’s Trent Brendon and David Lowenthal.

The ITA Regionals will continue on Saturday, when Tech sophomore Scott Schnugg will compete in the qualifying singles draw quarterfinals along with Wright and Menano in the main draw round of 16. Full tournament information and results can be found at www.tennisinformation.com
