Nissan #ProJackets Golf Report

May 31, 2016

Matt Kuchar and Bryce Molder, who played together at Georgia Tech for three years and joined forces for the United States in the Walker Cup, both continued their high level of play last weekend with top-10 finishes at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.

Kuchar continued his climb up the FedEx Cup points standings by tying for sixth place at the Dean & DeLuca with a 9-under-par total of 271, eight shots off the pace of Jordan Spieth, and fired a 63 in Saturday’s round. He is up to 20th in FedEx Cup points for the year and has four top-10 finishes in his last five events. More importantly, Kuchar’s recent run has elevated him to 10th in the United States points standings for the Ryder Cup, which will be held Oct. 9-14 in Chaska, Minn. The top eight after The Barclays are automatic selections to the U.S. team.

In the final round of the 2016 DEAN & DELUCA Invitational, Matt Kuchar stuffs his 78-yard approach into within inches for a tap-in birdie putt on the par-4 2nd hole.

Molder now has five top-10 finishes in 19 events in 2015-16, and moved up to 45th in the FedEx Cup standings following his tie for 10th at the Dean & DeLuca, where he opened with a 64 and shot 8-under-par 272. Beginning with the RBC Heritage, Molder has finished T-6, T-42, T-8, T-12, T-24 and T-10 in his last six starts.

Bryce Molder pours in a lengthy par saver on No. 2 at DEAN & DELUCA

Cameron Tringale tied for 62nd place and Roberto Castro tied for 65th at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational, while Stewart Cink and Chesson Hadley missed the cut. Cink had returned to action for the first time since the RBC Heritage, taking time off to attend to his wife, Lisa, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Last minute decision to compete this week @DeanDeLucaInv in Fort Worth. @lisacink bouncing back in her third week of first chemo cycle.

Making the trek to Columbus, Ohio this week for The Memorial Tournament will be Castro, Cink, Kuchar and Tringale.

PGA Tour Champions: Larry Mize has turned in two excellent performances in the first two majors on the PGA Tour Champions season, first tying for seventh place in the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Ala., then tying for 16th at last weekend’s Senior POGA Championship at Benton Harbor, Mich. Mize, the 1987 Masters Champion, was steady with three rounds in the 60s for an 8-under-par total of 276. Rocco Mediate won the title with a 19-under-par 265.

MacKenzie Tour: Seth Reeves tied for 15th place in his debut last weekend in the PGA Canadian Tour’s season-opening event, the Freedom 55 Financial Open in Vancouver, British Columbia. Reeves, who had won medalist honors one of the Tour’s qualifying schools and full tour status for 2016, finished nine shots off the lead at 6-under-par 282, including a second-round 64.

U.S. Open: Matt Kuchar is the only former Yellow Jacket currently exempt into the field for this year’s U.S. Open Championship, which will be played June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh, Pa. But several present, future and former Tech players remain alive in qualifying. Sectional qualifiers will take place at 12 sites Monday, June 6, including one at Ansley Golf Club – Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga., where Bo Andrews, Roberto Castro, Jacob Joiner, Luke Schniederjans, Ollie Schniederjans and James White are in the field of 39 for the 36-hole qualifier.
