March 22, 2005

ATLANTA – Roberto Castro carded a one-under-par 71 Tuesday in soggy and cold conditions, but the rest of the No. 2-ranked Yellow Jackets faltered, and Georgia Tech fell to fourth place in the final standings at the Oregon Duck Invitational.

Castro finished alone in third place in the medal race, posting a six-under-par score of 210. It was his highest finish of the school year, and his fifth top-10 finish in seven tournaments. The individual race ended in a tie as Pepperdine’s Michael Putnam and Washington’s James Lepp each finished at 8-under 208. Lepp fired a 69 Monday to lead the Huskies to the team title, while Putnam countered with an even-par 72. Ryan Panichpakdee of Long Beach State and Zach Bixler of Washington tied for fourth at 213.

Washington surged to the team title by shooting a 2-under 286 Tuesday at the par-72, 6,854-yard Eugene Country Club. The Huskies shot 860 over three rounds to beat Nevada and San Diego State by six strokes. No. 2 Georgia Tech finished fourth at 867, while host Oregon took fifth at 869. Tech shot 295 Tuesday, seven over par.

Nicholas Thompson shot 74 for Tech Tuesday, and wound up in a tie for 12th place with three others at one-over 217. Chan Song, Mike Barbosa and Kevin Larsen all carded 75s Tuesday. Barbosa tied for 25th at three-over 220, Song tied for 32nd at 221, and Larsen tied for 55th at 226.

Tech returns to action Mar. 27-29 in the first Hootie at Bulls Bay tournament near Charleston, S.C.
