Georgia Tech Defeated By No. 15 Maryland

ATLANTA – Shay Doron scored 28 points and Crystal Langhorne added 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead No. 15 Maryland to a 72-65 victory over Georgia Tech on Thursday night.

Maryland (12-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 28-19 at the half and used a 10-0 run early in the second to open a 40-23 lead. Doron and Langhorne each scored four points in building the Terrapins’ biggest lead of the game.

Georgia Tech (10-4, 1-2) cut the lead to 70-65 with 9 seconds left on Stephanie Higgs’ 3-pointer.

Doron, a sophomore guard, scored 13 points and freshman center Langhorne scored six points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Terrapins in the opening half. Tech shot only 15.6 percent (7-of-45) in the opening period and Yellow Jackets leading scorer Higgs made only three of 16 shots for seven points. Chioma Nnamaka, Tech’s second leading scorer, was 0-for-9 from the field.

For the game Georgia Tech shot 24-for-82 (29 percent). Higgs finished with 20 points on 8-of-26 shooting and Nnamaka had seven points, making only 2-of-14. Maryland was 28-of-67 (42 percent).

Maryland jumped out to an 18-7 lead early with Doron scoring eight points. Georgia Tech then went on a 10-0 run capped by Megan Harpring’s basket with 7:39 left in the half.

The Terps then outscored Tech 10-2 to take a nine-point lead at the break. Doron had five points in the run.

Doron scored a career-high 37 points in Maryland’s upset of then-No. 5 North Carolina 92-77 on Sunday to move up from No. 9 in the rankings, it’s highest since 1992-93.

Tech returns to action when it travels to Duke Monday. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on WREK-Radio, 91.1 FM in Atlanta and online at www.wrek.org.
