Tech's Whiteside Named ACC Rookie Of The Week

Dec. 24, 2012

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman Aaliyah Whiteside was named the ACC’s Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week Dec. 24 after leading the Yellow Jackets to a 52-44 win over the Washington Huskies Dec. 21 at McCamish Pavilion.

Whiteside is the second Yellow Jacket to earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors this year after classmate Brittany Jackson earned the award for helping Tech to wins over Kennesaw State and Marquette. Whiteside becomes the third Jacket to win a weekly accolade from the conference after Tyaunna Marshall was named Player of the Week last week.

Whiteside, making her fourth career start against the Huskies, was the only Yellow Jacket in double digits with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting. The Memphis, Tenn., native knocked down Tech’s only 3-pointers, extending the Jackets’ streak of games with at least one three made to 83 games.

“Aaliyah is playing really well and having an impact on our team. She is very deserving of this award,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said.

She made three of her five free throw attempts, added four rebounds and only committed one turnover in 30 minutes of play.

Whiteside and the Jackets return to action Dec. 29 and 30 when Tech travels to the FIU Sun & Fun Classic. The Yellow Jackets will face Quinnipiac at 8 p.m. Dec. 29 and either Northeastern or host FIU on Dec. 30.
