THE FLATS – Georgia Tech signed head women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph to a two-year contract extension through the 2019-20 season, Director of Athletics Mike Bobinski announced Tuesday.

“We’re pleased to announce that MaChelle Joseph will continue to lead our women’s basketball program for years to come,” Bobinski said.  “MaChelle has established a strong track record of success and player development here at Georgia Tech.  Her great appreciation for both academic and athletic excellence provides a solid foundation as we strive toward a championship level program.”

Joseph has had unprecedented success at the helm of the Yellow Jackets during the past 11 seasons. Joseph owns a career-record of 213-134, and she is just the second head coach in the Yellow Jacket history to hit 200 career wins. Her 61 percent career winning percentage is the highest in Georgia Tech history. Currently, Joseph’s 213 career wins puts her 11 wins away from becoming the all-time winningest coach in program history.

“I am very appreciative of all of the opportunities I have had the chance to be a part of here at Georgia Tech the past 12 years,” Joseph said. “I started my career in the ACC at Georgia Tech and I hope to finish my career here. Mike Bobinski and senior woman’s administrator Theresa Wenzel have been extremely supportive of our women’s basketball student-athletes and I am looking forward to continuing to build on the winning foundation we have established.”

Joseph has seven 20-win seasons and a matching seven NCAA tournament appearances, including six-straight from 2007 through 2012. Under Joseph’s direction, 17 Yellow Jackets have garnered All-ACC accolades. Four Jackets have been named All-ACC First Team members since Joseph became the head coach in 2003. Six freshmen have been named to the All-ACC Freshman Team, including one a year from 2011 to 2014. Tyaunna Marshall was named an AP honorable mention All-American in both 2013 and 2014.

Joseph has coached six Jackets that were selected in the WNBA Draft. Both Alex Montgomery and Sasha Goodlett were chosen in the first round of the WNBA Draft in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Joseph was named the Georgia College Women’s Coach of the twice in her tenure and five of her players were recognized as the Georgia College Players of the Year.

The 2013-14 season proved to be a special year for Joseph. She won her 200th career game against Portland State on December 17, 2013. Marshall broke the school’s scoring record in 2013-14 and became the first Yellow Jacket to reach 2,000 career points with 2,129. Marshall was named to the All-ACC First Team and All-ACC Defensive Team, while Kaela Davis was honored on the All-ACC Second Team and All-ACC Freshman Team. The Jackets also returned to the NCAA tournament and scored an average of 79.7 points per game – the second highest average in Tech history.

The Yellow Jackets open up the 2014-15 season with an exhibition game against Flagler on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion.
