THE FLATS – Two nights after his game-winning performance, junior pitcher Brandon Gold struck out seven in eight scoreless innings Friday to lead No. 17 Georgia Tech to a 4-1 win over UMBC at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Gold (1-0) earned his first win of the season and has struck out 15 batters and allowed one unearned run in 13.0 innings. Georgia Tech improved to 5-0 on the season, extending its nonconference home winning streak to 15 games.

• Tech turned two double plays, increasing its season total to nine. The Jackets have turned 258 double plays since 2012 – the second-most in the nation during that span.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Jackets pushed across two runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Tristin English opened the inning with a single through the right side and later advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. Arden Pabst moved runners to second and third on a ground out to second. Keenan Innis drew a two-out walk for Wade Bailey, who knocked in two runs with a single.
• Tech added one in the fourth when Matt Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk to plate Pabst for a 3-0 advantage.
Kel Johnson drove home another insurance run for the Jackets in the seventh with an RBI double to right-center to score Gonzalez.
• With Robert Winborne on in relief of Brandon Gold, the Retrievers scored their only run of the game – an unearned run on an errant throw to first by Wade Bailey. The error allowed Jamie Switalski to score from second.

• Sophomore 2B Wade Bailey went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, driving in the game’s first two runs in the second.
• Senior 3B Matt Gonzalez continues to hit the ball well, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. He also recorded his first stolen base of the season.
• Sophomore DH Kel Johnson broke an 0-for-11 slump with an RBI double to right-center in the seventh inning.
• Freshman 1B Tristin English tied a career best with two hits.
• Junior RHP Brandon Gold threw a career-high 8.0 innings, scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts. He threw 99 pitches and faced 29 UMBC batters.
• Freshman RHP Robert Winborne made his second career appearance. He allowed one unearned run on one hit with one walk in the ninth inning.
• Junior SS Connor Justus turned his 100th career double play.
