Swimming & Diving Wraps Up Day 2 Of GT Invitational

THE FLATS – Tech swimming and diving team finished out the second day of competition at the GT Invitational at the GT Aquatic Center. The Jacket men hold second place with 862 points while the women are holding at fourth with 450 points.

Florida State currently leads on both sides of the invitational with the men scoring 1,367 points, while the women have scored 1,099. Alabama is in third on the men’s side (461), Emory fourth (172) Miami fifth (44) and Hawai`i (41). For the women, Florida Gulf Coast is in second (691.5), Miami third (554), Alabama fifth (334.5), Harvard sixth (257), Emory seventh (121), Hawai`i eighth (61) and Clemson ninth (45).

Tech’s men had two event wins on the night. Andrew Kosic posted an NCAA B qualifying time in the 100 back, swimming 48.35 to nearly beat out FSU’s Josh Friedel at 48.41. Two other Jackets finished in the top 10 of that event with Bo Hatchett third at 49.47 and Nicholas Colletti seventh at 50.87.

Matthew Vaughan won the 100 breast, also swimming an NCAA B qualifying time of 54.72. Anton Lagerquvist finished fifth in that event (55.84), while Ricky Lehner was seventh (56.71) and Ryan Salmon eighth (56.78).

The Jackets picked up a second place finish and another NCAA B time with Nico van Duijn swimming 47.29 in the 100 fly. Eric Chiu placed fourth (48.39) and Mark Sarman fifth (49.13), while Hatchett was ninth (49.99).

Andrew Chetcuti placed third in the 200 free (1:39.77) with Mats Westergren sixth (1:40.25). The pair also teamed up with Mike Hart and Zach Tillman to finish second in the 800 free relay (6.44.36) to finish off the night strong.

GT’s women scored big with a third place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Tech team of Lexi Weber, Erika Staskevicius, Kate Riley and Hailey White swam 7:30.43, beating out Florida Gulf Coast in fourth at 7:31.59.

Three Jacket swimmers scored in the top 10 of the 200-yard freestyle led by Hailey White in fourth at 1:49.19. Lexi Weber placed sixth in the event (1:50.66) and Erika Staskevicius in ninth (1:51.75).

Kate Brandus finished sixth in the 100-yard fly with a time of 56.22. Catherine Richards placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.21) while Ashley Hardy posted the same place in the 1-meter diving with 271.90 points.

The GT Invitational wraps up Sunday with prelims at 9 a.m., followed by the finals at 3 p.m.
