June 19, 2009

Georgia Tech track & field junior Billy Mateker was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American third team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization and publication announced Thursday.

A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Mateker holds a 4.0 grade-point average in Materials Science Engineering.

He finished sixth at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships in the 800 meters and ran a personal best time of 1:52.58 in the 800-meter qualifying round. He also placed second at the Georgia-Georgia Tech Dual Meet in April with an outdoor personal best of 1:53.87.

Earlier this week, Mateker earned All-ACC Indoor Academic team honors. It was the third time in his career that he earned an Academic All-ACC honor.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and All-America teams are voted on by CoSIDA members across the country and are divided into districts. Student athletes who are selected to the All-District first team are eligible for the national ballot.
