Farmer Named To National Pitcher Of The Year Watch List

April 24, 2013

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior RHP Buck Farmer is one of 41 pitchers nationwide named to the initial watch list for the 2013 Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond Sports and presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 29.

Farmer has enjoyed a dominant senior campaign, returning to the Flats for his final year of eligibility after being named to the All-ACC first team and being drafted in the 15th round by Milwaukee last year. The senior right-handed ace from Conyers, Ga., is 7-2 with a 2.22 ERA, including a pair of wins over top-five teams Virginia and Florida State.

“Buck has had an outstanding career and is putting us on his back every time he takes the mound,” said head coach Danny Hall. “He is doing exactly what you’d like a senior to do. He’s a vocal leader on and off the field and has been our workhorse over the last two years. He’s established himself as one of the nation’s best pitchers and it’s great for him to be recognized on this list.”

Farmer has stepped up in the biggest moment as he is 6-1 in eight career starts versus ACC teams ranked in the top 10. That includes a pair of wins this year at then-No. 5 Florida State, and a complete-game masterpiece versus No. 5 Virginia. Against the Seminoles in Tallahassee, Farmer tossed seven shutout innings, allowing two hits with seven strikeouts in the Jackets’ 10-1 win. Against the fifth-ranked Cavaliers in Atlanta, Farmer went the distance with 10 strikeouts in Tech’s 2-1 victory.

Twice this year, Farmer has been named the ACC Pitcher of the Week, and the senior garnered National Pitcher of the Week accolades from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after striking out a career-high 14 batters in eight innings on Opening Day in a 3-0 shutout of Akron.

Farmer’s seven wins are tied for the second-most in the ACC, while he ranks seventh in ERA (2.22), second in strikeouts (79) and second in innings pitched (69.0). For his career at Georgia Tech, Farmer is 31-10 with a 3.05 ERA and 344 strikeouts. He ranks fourth all-time at Tech in strikeouts, wins and innings (336.0) and is 12th in ERA.

Farmer leads all NCAA active pitchers in career wins (31) and strikeouts (344).

Of the 41 players named to the watch list for the 2013 National Pitcher of the Year Award, four are from the ACC – Farmer, Scott Sitz of Florida State and North Carolina’s Kent Emanuel and Trent Thornton.
