Virginia Upends Georgia Tech, 5-4

ATLANTA – Virginia’s Amy McKean hit a two-run home run and Whitney Holstun drove in two runs to lead Virginia (15-11, 2-4 ACC) to a 5-4 win over Georgia Tech (28-9, 5-1 ACC) in Atlantic Coast Conference softball action on Sunday at Glenn Field.

The Yellow Jackets’ Sarah Wood (10-3) threw 2.2 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and four earned runs in the loss. Junior Caitlin Lever led the Tech bats, going 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Freshman Lacey Richardson worked 2.1 scoreless innings for Tech, striking out two, and freshman Whitney Haller threw a perfect final two innings.

The Cavaliers jumped out in front of the Yellow Jackets in the top of the second inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Erin Horn Tech trailed 1-0. Senior Amy Hosier tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI double to left-center field.

UVa’s Amy McKean put the Cavaliers on top for the second time in the top of the third inning with a two-run home run to left field as the Jackets trailed 3-1. Whitney Holston drove in two more runs with a single to right field as the Cavaliers pushed their lead to four, 5-1.

Junior Caitlin Lever and freshman Blair Shimandle drove in runs for Tech in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring the Jackets within two, 5-3.

Lever drove in her second run of the game for Tech in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bunt single to second base as the Jackets got within one, 5-4.

Tech scored four runs, on five hits and committed three errors, while UVa scored five runs, on six hits and had one error.

The Yellow Jackets will host No. 11 Georgia on Wednesday, March 29, for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Glenn Field.
