ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field squads will head up to Boston, Mass. for the 2012 Indoor ACC Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track Center. The meet will be hosted by Boston College for the first time ever.

Last season, the Tech men took 11th while the women placed 12th at the meet. Virginia Tech enters the men’s competition as the defending champion, and Florida State has won eight of the last nine titles. Maryland leads the ACC with 26 overall in program history.

On the women’s side, third-ranked Clemson has won two consecutive titles and three overall. North Carolina’s women have won a conference-leading 15 championships.

The ACC Championships will kick off Thursday, February 23 with the first day of the multi events. Friday will see the conclusion of the multis- in which Kayla McKeirnan set a school record in the Heptathlon last year, along with the high jump, long jump, weight throw and women’s pole vault. Field competition will begin at Noon. The track events to be featured include the qualifying rounds of the mile, 60m hurdles, 400m dash, 60m dash, 800m run, 200m run, and the finals of the 5,000m run and the distance medley. Track competition will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Day Three will begin at 11 a.m. with the shot put, triple jump and men’s pole vault. The running events, which will begin at Noon will play host to the finals of Friday’s events as well as the 3,000m run and the 4x400m relay.

The squads will return to competition following a week off. Last time out saw much success for the field athletes at the Vulcan Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. Freshman Nikita Kirillov set the school record in the pole vault, launching to a height of 5.20 meters(17-0.75) the first ever Tech athlete to break 17 feet. Julienne McKee had a top five mark in the long jump with a personal best and first place finish of 6.13m (20-1.5). On the track side of things, the men’s distance runners and sprint corps also saw a lot of success on the day.

Tech track has continued to shine in the 2012 indoor season as school records have fallen and many personal bests have been achieved. The team looks to keep the success going into the conference championship.
