ATLANTA – Redshirt senior Jen Yee went 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double, five RBI and three walks as the No. 11/8 Georgia Tech Softball team (20-3) split a pair of games on the first day of the inaugural Springhill Suites Buckhead Classic at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets beat Mercer 8-2 in the first game, but fell to Fordham, 2-1 in eight innings in the night cap. Yee now has 15 home runs on the season which leads the ACC.

In game one against Mercer, the Yellow Jackets wasted no time in jumping on starting pitcher Jessie Holmes for five runs in the first inning. After sophomore Kelsi Weseman singled, redshirt senior Jen Yee hit a line drive, two-run home run over the fence in left-center field, her ACC high 14th of the year. Later in the inning after two Mercer errors, sophomore Jessica Sinclair hit a three-run home run to make it a 5-0 game. It marked the second straight game that Sinclair has hit a three-run home run and was her fifth round-tripper on the year.

Mercer got one of the runs back in the top of the second inning as Kristin Marko led off with a solo home run off Tech sophomore pitcher Jessica Coan.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tech added two more runs to make it a 7-1 game. Yee added another RBI with a sharp single up the middle and junior Kristine Priebe drove in a run with a double. The Jackets had the bases loaded and a chance to blow the game open but Holmes was able to get out of the jam.

Yee capped her 4-for-4 day with a RBI double in the fifth inning as the Yellow Jackets opened up an 8-1 lead.

Freshman Rachel Glazebrook pitched the final two innings for Georgia Tech and gave up one run on three hits. She walked one and also struck out a batter. Coan (6-0) got the win as she allowed just one run on four hits. She walked one and struck out seven.

In game two, Fordham was the home team and took advantage of a Yellow Jacket error to plate a run in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsey Kay Bright singled with one out, but was able to move to third base on an error by Tech junior center fielder Christy Jones. Later in the inning, she scored on a single by Erin Fisher.

Fordham had a chance to add to its lead in the second inning, but Tech freshman pitcher Hope Rush was able to get out of a two-on and one-out jam. Then in the top of the fourth inning, Yee struck again for the Jackets. She led off with a line drive home run that just got over the fence in right field to tie the game at one. It was her 15th home run of the season.

Tech had a golden chance to take the lead for the first time with runners at first and third and no outs, but Fordham pitcher Jen Mineau got three straight pop-ups to keep the game tied.

Both teams had chances in the middle innings but Mineau and Rush continued to work out of jams and the game moved to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Jackets had the bases loaded and two outs but Mineau struck out freshman Caitlin Jordan to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Fordham wasted no time in plating the winning run. With Jamie LaBovick at second base following the international tie-breaker rule, she scored on the first pitch of the inning as Erin Fisher singled down the left-field line.

Rush (9-3) took the hard-luck loss despite not allowing an earned run. She scattered nine hits and did not walk a batter while striking out eight. Mineau (10-1) got the win allowing one earned run on two hits. She walked five and struck out 13.

The inaugural Springhill Suites Buckhead Classic continues tomorrow with four more games at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets will take on Georgia State at 11 a.m. and then Mercer again at 1:30 p.m. Fordham then plays Georgia State at 4 p.m. and Mercer at 6:30 p.m. Admission to all four games is free.
