THE FLATS — Georgia Tech men’s tennis (7-2) swept Furman (7-4) and The Citadel (5-9) in a doubleheader on Saturday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The No. 14 Jackets topped Furman 6-1 before sweeping The Citadel 7-0.
Next weekend, Tech travels to Clemson on Mar. 3 to kick off conference play before hosting Florida State on Mar. 5 at 12 p.m.
Furman Singles Update: Junior Daniel Yun got the first singles point for the Jackets, winning 6-3, 6-1 on court six over Josh Pistorius. Senior Cole Fiegel quickly followed, topping Alex Steryous at the number four position, 6-2, 6-2 to give Tech the 3-0 advantage. Senior Carlos Benito clinched the win for the Jackets at 4-0 on court two with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Cameron Green. Andrew Li fell on court one to give the Paladines their only point of the match. The Jackets’ fifth point came from Chris Yun on court five with a 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 win over Jake Munns. Carlos Divar took the final point of the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 decision over Clarke Wilson.
Furman Doubles Update: Tech took the doubles point for the sixth time this season. Divar and sealed a 6-2 win over Adam Steryous and Munns on court one to give the Jackets the advantage. Fiegel and Li followed suit, topping Alex Steryous and Green on court two, 6-4, to give the Jackets the point.
The Citadel Singles Update: Divar took the first point for the Jackets with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court one over Michael Anzalone. Phillip Gresk gave the Jackets their third point with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court five. Daniel Yun clinched the win for Tech on court two with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Matthew Henson. Michael Kay won in straight sets on court four, 6-2, 6-3. Elijah Melendez took his match on court six, 6-1, 6-2 before Chris Yun completed the sweep on court three with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The Citadel Doubles Update: Playing three new pairings, the Jackets swept the doubles point. Kay and Chris Yun won first on court two, with a 6-0 decision. Melendez and Gresk clinched the doubles point on court three with another 6-0 win over Nawabi and Grady. Divar and Daniel Yun completed the sweep of the doubles point on court one with a 6-4 victory.
Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “It was a nice day and it was our first match that we got a chance to play in significant wind. I felt like on a day like that, you’re not really ever going to feel good but you’ve got to fight good and I felt like we fought pretty well. We had a couple of matches in the first match that were close and tested us mentally. It was good in the second match to get a chance for everybody to play and everybody is working just as hard. It was a good opportunity to get everybody in the lineup and give them opportunities to improve and help this team improve so overall it was a good day for us.”
