EVANSTON, Ill. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis (2-1) downed No. 18 Stanford (2-1), 4-1, in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday. The Jackets head to the championship match to face either No. 10 Northwestern or Memphis at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday.
Singles Update: Senior Cole Fiegel grabbed the first singles win for the Jackets, topping Brandon Sutter, 6-3, 7-5. No. 61 Andrew Li put the Jackets up 3-0 by taking his match over Sameer Kumar in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Carlos Divar clinched the 4-1 win for the Yellow Jackets with a 6-2, 7-5 rout of Jack Barber.
Doubles Update: The Jackets took the doubles point for the second straight match. Li and Fiegel advanced to 3-0 on the season with a 6-4 win over Barber and Genender. It came down to court two for the doubles point, Carlos Benito and Divar put away No. 55 Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski in the tiebreak, 7-6 (1).
Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “Good win for the guys today over a very good team. Stanford has an incredible tennis tradition and we had a tough battle with them. Our guys stayed strong at the key moments and that was the different. We will enjoy this win for a short time and start preparing for the Northwestern/Memphis winner.”
