THE FLATS – The McAuley Aquatic Center will be a buzz over a three-day span on November 16-18, as the Georgia Tech swimming & diving team hosts its annual Georgia Tech Invitational. The preliminaries will take place at 10 a.m. each morning, while the finals are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. each night over the three days of competition.
The teams competing this week include a number of nationally ranked teams. On the women’s side, the field includes No. 11 Alabama, No. 13 Auburn, Campbell, East Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech and South Carolina. The participating men’s teams include No. 14 Alabama, East Carolina, No. 18 Florida State, Georgia Tech and No. 19 South Carolina.
“We are extremely excited for our annual GT Invitational this week,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “There are a number of really strong teams in the field once again this year which will make for a very exciting event and also push us both as a team and individually over the entire three days of competition. Our team has worked really hard this fall and has continued to improve as the season has progressed. We expect this week to be no different as we are back at home in McAuley.”
Tech is coming off of dual meet losses to the nationally ranked Georgia Bulldogs back on Nov. 8 in which the Yellow Jackets recorded a total of nine individual wins and two relay victories combined between the women’s and men’s squads.
The Yellow Jackets’ women’s team (3-2) have been led this season by junior Iris Wang in the pool and freshman Camryn Hidalgo on the boards.
Wang ranks fifth in the ACC in the 200 free (1:47.85) and seventh in the league in the 100 free (49.76), as both times are NCAA B qualifying marks, while Hidalgo is first in the ACC in the 1-meter dive (331.35) and third overall in the 3-meter dive (353.63) in her first season on The Flats.
Fellow Tech swimmers Emily Ilgenfritz (17:26.07) and Camille Long (17:36.21) rank seventh and 10th overall, respectively, in the ACC in the 1650 free.
On the men’s side (3-2), a quartet of Jackets have paced the team thus far this year in Caio Pumputis, Rodrigo Correia, Moises Loschi and Matt Casillas.
In his first year at Tech, Pumputis ranks first overall in the ACC in both the 200 free (1:36.12) and the 200 breast (1:56.88) events, both of which are NCAA B qualifying times. He also is second in the conference in the 100 breast (54.45), third in the 200 IM (1:47.79) and ninth in the 400 IM (3:57.36) on the year.
Fellow Brazilian Correia is in the top 10 of the ACC in three different events, as the junior co-captain is sixth overall in the conference in the 200 back (1:46.56), seventh in the 100 back (47.88) and ninth in the 100 free (44.43).
Loschi has recorded the fourth-fastest time in the ACC on the year in the 200 breast (1:58.67) and the fifth-fastest mark in the 100 breast (54.88), both of which are NCAA B times, while on the diving boards Casillas ranks second overall in the league in the 3-meter dive (404.25) and sixth in the 1-meter (359.40).
Teammates Christian Ferraro and Joonas Koski are also both ranked among the ACC’s top 10, as Ferraro is fifth overall in the 200 fly (1:47.14) and Koski ranks 10th in the 1650 free (16:00.30).
Team scores will be kept for the three days of competition by way of championship scoring through the first 20 places: 26-23-22-21-20-19-18-17-16-15-12-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.
