ATLANTA – Despite a successful showing by the divers and sprint group, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell in the first ever dual with Penn State, Saturday. The men’s team dropped a 177-122 fight while the women fell 202.5-93.5.

The Jacket diving corps continued their success into Saturday’s meet as Brandon Makinson and Chris Khosravi once again finished 1-2 in both the 1 and 3-meter diving. Makinson took the victories with scores of 354.90 (1-meter) and 396.68 (3-meter), his 3-meter score just shy of his own personal best and school record. Khosravi took home the second place spot with scores of 315.23 (1-meter) and 326.25 (2-meter).

On the women’s side of things, Ashley Hardy earned first place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 268.85 bringing home second in the 3-meter (268.13). Sarah Roethel ended the day with a couple of fourth place finishes in the 1-meter (175.05) and 3-meter (208.95).

“All-in-all I was proud of how the divers handled themselves today,” said diving coach John Ames. “After a long competition last night that saw 23 entrants in both the 1 and 3-meter dives, coupled with parents weekend and family in town, I was very happy at how the divers bounced back and continued their success in today’s meet.”

The Tech sprint group saw a lot of success on the day led by Andrew Kosic who came away with the victory in the 50-free with a time of 20.85. Kosic also tallied a second place finish in the 100-free (45.94) and helped the Jackets to a 200-Free Relay win with teammates Nigel Plummer, Jake Johnson and Andrew Chetcuti.

Plummer finished just behind Kosic in the sprint free races with a third place, 21.07 finish in the 50-free and a fourth place, 46.84 finish in the 100-Free. Johnson took fifth in that race with a time of 47.27.

Newcomer Catherine Richards started the day off with a second place finish in the 100-Breast in a time of 1:08.05, continuing her success and taking third in the 200-Breast with a 2:24.87 finish. On the men’s side of the race, Anton Lagerqvist earned the same finishes taking second in 100-Breast with a time of 57.52 followed by Ryan Salmon in third with a time of 58.87. Lagerqvist also finished third in the 200, with a time of 2:05.28. John Hermes earned the fourth place finish in 2:12.01.

Hailey White saw success in the distance races taking home third in the 1,000-Free with a time of 10:28.08, moving up a spot in the 500-Free with a second place finish of 5:06.21. Andreas Nilsson also took third in the 1,000-Free on the men’s side with a 9:53.21 finish and took second in the 500-Free touching the wall in 4:43.30.

The 100-Fly was also a successful race for the Jackets as both Jordan Evans and Eric Chiu earned second place finishes in their respective races with times of 55.72 and 50.72.

The Jackets will take a couple of weeks off and will return to action when they host the Georgia Tech Invitational on the weekend of November 18-20. The Invite will play host to over 10 schools over the course of the three day meet.
