Practice No. 13 – Thursday, Aug. 16

A special visitor paid a visit to Georgia Tech football’s 13th practice of fall camp on Thursday – the ice cream man.

Much to the delight of the Yellow Jackets, head coach Paul Johnson arranged for an ice-cream truck to pull into Rose Bowl Field during Tech’s customary mid-practice break. The break became an extended one as the Jackets enjoyed their frozen treats before returning to practice.

Plays of the Day: The final period of Thursday’s practice featured 11-on-11 work in third-and-five situations. The biggest offensive play of the period came when senior quarterback TaQuon Marshall went deep to senior A-back Clinton Lynch and hit him in stride with a perfect pass for a long touchdown. Defensively, true freshman defensive back Zamari Walton went up high to pull down a 50-50 ball for an interception.

What’s Next? The Yellow Jackets will go through a relatively light workout on Friday in preparation for an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday that will officially bring fall camp to a close. Georgia Tech opens the fall semester on Monday.

Practice No. 12 – Wednesday, Aug. 15

#TGW: The Dog Days of Camp

For the third-straight day, Georgia Tech football practiced in full pads and 90-plus degree temperatures at Rose Bowl Field on Wednesday.

Plays of the Day: During 7-on-7 drills, redshirt freshman quarterback Tobias Oliver hooked up with A-backs for a pair of long passes. On the first, sophomore Xavier Gantt made a terrific adjustment to a back-shoulder throw from Oliver, kept his concentration and his feet in bounds and hauled in the pass over a lunging defender. Several plays later, Oliver hit junior Nathan Cottrell in stride down the sideline with a pass that traveled 30-plus yards in the air. After he caught the perfectly placed pass, Cottrell out-raced defenders down the left sideline for a touchdown.

The two-minute drill was the focus of the final 11-on-11 period of the day, with the offense needing to move the ball 70 yards in 1:35 for a game-winning touchdown. Despite the offense moving the ball deep into defensive territory once, it did not manage to score against the defense. Senior end Anree Saint-Amour provided the highlight of the period when he sacked the quarterback twice in three plays to end one of the series.

What’s Next? Georgia Tech holds its final full-pads practice of the week on Thursday at Rose Bowl Field. The Yellow Jackets will be in shells on Friday in preparations for the second intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Practice No. 11 – Tuesday, Aug. 14

With less than a week left of preseason camp before classes begin, the Yellow Jackets returned to Rose Bowl Field for a full-pads practice on a hot and humid Tuesday afternoon.

Plays of the Day: Neither the offense nor the defense was able to get the upper hand in the first 11-on-11 live period until the last two plays of the session saw both the offense and defense score on back-to-back plays to close the head-to-head period out midway through practice. In the second-to-last play of the period, the defense struck first as redshirt freshman defensive back Tre Swilling jumped the route of the wide receiver and picked off the pass along the left sideline for a pick six. However, on the very next play the offense answered back in a big way as redshirt freshman quarterback Tobias Oliver threw a perfect deep ball to a streaking Jair Hawkins-Anderson down the middle of the field and behind the defense for a long touchdown score in the last play of the period.

What’s Next? Georgia Tech will again be in full pads for practice No. 12 on Wednesday afternoon.

Practice No. 10 – Monday, Aug. 13

After a much-needed day off on Sunday, the Yellow Jackets returned to full pads and Rose Bowl Field for practice No. 10 on Monday afternoon.

Plays of the Day: The Plays of the Day for Monday consisted of four total plays from two Jackets in Jaquan Henderson and Jalen Camp. In the first of two 11-on-11 sessions, the defense had the upper hand as Henderson recovered not one, but two fumbles in the backfield. However, in the second 11-on-11 offensive versus defense battle, Camp made not one but two great catches down the right sideline on deep balls from quarterback TaQuon Marshall to help the offense close the practice out on a high note.

What’s Next? Georgia Tech will continue its second week of fall practice on Tuesday afternoon at Rose Bowl Field.

Practice No. 7 – Thursday, Aug. 9

For the second time this week, late-afternoon storms forced Georgia Tech football to conduct a large portion of its practice indoors on Thursday.

Wearing full pads for the third-straight day, the Yellow Jackets began practice outdoors at Rose Bowl Field before heavy rain and lightning rolled into Midtown Atlanta about midway through the two-hour-and-15-minute workout. However, thanks to the John and Mary Brock Indoor Practice Facility, practice continued uninterrupted indoors.

Plays of the Day: After Georgia Tech’s defense had the upper-hand during 11-on-11 drills to close out Wednesday’s practice, the Yellow Jackets’ offense returned the favor on Thursday. Practicing red-zone situations, the offense scored on 6-of-6 possessions, often needing just one or two plays to find paydirt. Senior quarterback TaQuon Marshall accounted for two of the six touchdowns with a scoring run and a TD pass to senior wideout Brad Stewart. Redshirt freshman running back Jordan Mason was also responsible for two scores, displaying speed to beat defenders to the pylon on one touchdown run and displaying power to break a handful of tackles on his way to a second. Sophomore B-back Jerry Howard also had a touchdown run and sophomore quarterback Lucas Johnson connected with senior A-back Clinton Lynch for a scoring pass.

What’s Next? The Yellow Jackets will have a relatively light workout on Friday in preparation for their first full intrasquad scrimmage of the season on Saturday.

Practice No. 6 – Wednesday, Aug. 8

The Yellow Jackets again practiced for over two hours in full pads on Wednesday afternoon, this time staying outside in the hot and humid Atlanta afternoon weather the entire 23 periods.

Plays of the Day: Again excited to be going 11-on-11 in full pads on Wednesday, both teams made some plays against the other in the first 11-on-11 session midway through practice No. 6. The first big play came from the defense, as true freshman linebacker and defensive back Charlie Thomas made the first of his two tackles for loss during the 11-on-11 drill, getting in the backfield and halting an offensive back in his tracks for a five-yard loss on an option pitch.

The very next play the offense returned the favor, as redshirt junior A-back Nathan Cottrell broke through a hole on a pitch to the left side and sprinted down the sideline for a touchdown with the defensive players on his heels.

What’s Next? The Yellow Jackets will again be in full pads for Thursday afternoon’s practice at Rose Bowl Field and the John and Mary Brock Indoor Practice Facility.

Practice No. 5 – Tuesday, Aug. 7

The sounds of pads popping returned to The Flats on Tuesday when Georgia Tech football donned full pads for the first time this season during a two-and-15-minute practice at Rose Bowl Field and the John and Mary Brock Indoor Practice Facility.

Lightning moved into Midtown Atlanta midway through practice but, thanks to the Brock Facility, the workout continued uninterrupted indoors.

Play of the Day: While the Yellow Jackets held 11-on-11 drills in full pads for the first time on Tuesday, the most impressive plays of the day came during 7-on-7 work earlier in the afternoon. Defensively, true freshman linebacker Quez Jackson made a huge play when he picked off a deflected pass and returned it for a touchdown. Just a few plays later, the offense turned in a big play of its own when senior quarterback TaQuon Marshall found junior A-back Omahri Jarrett streaking behind the secondary and hit him in stride for a long gain.

What’s Next? Georgia Tech will once again be in full pads for Wednesday afternoon’s practice at Rose Bowl Field and the John and Mary Brock Indoor Practice Facility.

Practice No. 4 – Monday, Aug. 6

The Yellow Jackets once again ventured out to Rose Bowl Field on Monday afternoon for the fourth practice of the fall preseason.

Tech, who was again in helmets and shoulder pads for the second straight day, practiced in the heat for a total of 24 periods and two and a half hours.

Play of the Day: With the team in just helmets and “shells” again, the 7-on-7 action midway through the practice session saw the offense strike early as redshirt sophomore quarterback Lucas Johnson put a well-placed ball into the outstretched arms of redshirt freshman wideout Liam Byrne who was covered by not one, but two Jacket defenders 25-yards down the right side line for a “big play” completion.

The defense would not allow another big play over the offense versus defense portion and broke up a number of passes as the period came to an end.

What’s Next? Georgia Tech will be in full pads for the first time in fall camp on Tuesday afternoon.

Practice No. 3 – Sunday, Aug. 5

Georgia Tech football moved a step closer to full-contact on Sunday when it strapped on shoulder pads for the first time this fall during a two-and-a-half-hour practice at Rose Bowl Field.

Per NCAA rules, the Yellow Jackets were permitted to wear helmets and shoulder pads for the third practice of fall camp, after donning just helmets and shorts for the first two workouts of the year. While there still was no tackling during Sunday’s practice, the Jackets did hold their first 11-on-11 drills of the season.

Plays of the Day: The 7-on-7 periods towards the end of Sunday’s practice were perhaps the most action-packed segments of Georgia Tech’s fall camp to date. The passing drills saw the offense connect on two long touchdown passes, with true freshman wide receiver Malachi Carter and junior A-back Omahri Jarrett on the receiving end of the scoring tosses. On the flip side, Georgia Tech’s defense picked off three passes during the closing 7-on-7 drills, with redshirt freshman cornerback Tre Swilling, sophomore safety Tariq Carpenter and sophomore linebacker Jakob Brashear all recording interceptions. Brashear’s pickoff was particularly impressive, as he dropped back in coverage and went high in the air to bring down a throw intended for a receiver several yards behind him.

With tackling still barred from practice, the 11-on-11 period to close out Sunday’s workout was relatively uneventful. However, Carter made his second big play of the afternoon when he went high in the air for a terrific catch on a slant pattern, quickly regained his balance, turned upfield and pulled away from the defense for another long score.

What’s Next? Georgia Tech will once again wear “shells” (helmets and shoulder pads) for Monday’s fourth practice of the year before strapping on full pads for Tuesday’s workout.

Practice No. 2 – Saturday, Aug. 4

Georgia Tech returned to Rose Bowl Field for practice No. 2 of preseason camp on what went from a hot and humid Atlanta afternoon at the start of practice to an overcast early evening with a slight breeze in the air at the end of the second practice session.

Per NCAA rules, the Yellow Jackets were back in just helmets and shorts for Saturday’s practice, which again saw 24 periods in which Tech did skill work by position groups, worked on special teams, split into offensive and defensive units, went 7-on-7 and ended the day with a conditioning drill.
