Peresson Wins Bronze at U20 European Championship

THE FLATS – Incoming freshman Antonia Peresson won a bronze medal with the Italian National Team at the U20 European Championship this past week in Udine, Italy.

Peresson was one of three Yellow Jackets that competed in the U20 European Championship. Rising sophomore Katarina Vuckovic competed with the Serbian National team and took fourth place in the U20 European Championship. Incoming freshman Simina Avram represented Romania at the Division B U20 European Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Peresson averaged 3.0 points per game and 0.5 rebounds per game for team Italy in eight games helping the team to a 6-3 record and a bronze medal. The Italian National team made it out of Group D play with a 2-1 record. Peresson then faced off against future teammate Vuckovic and team Serbia. Italy won the first meeting against Serbia, 77-67.

Following a close, 56-54, loss to Ukraine, team Italy captured wins against the Slovak Republic and Russia. Against Russia, Peresson scored a tournament-high 10 points and shot 80 percent from the free throw line. She also made two 3-point baskets against Russia. Following a 64-46 setback to Spain, Peresson and team Italy defeated Serbia for the second time, 68-63, to capture the bronze medal. During the bronze medal game, Peresson scored three points.

Vuckovic aided the Serbian National team to a 5-4 record overall and a fourth place finish. The rising sophomore averaged 8.7 points per game while grabbing an average of 3.9 rebounds per game. Vuckovic scored in double-figures in five games during the U20 European Championship. Vuckovic led her team in 3-point field goal percentage (57.9 percent), making 11 out of her 19 3-point attempts in the tournament.

Team Serbia started off the tournament with two straight wins against the Slovak Republic and Ukraine and finished 2-1 in Group C play. In a 77-67 loss to Italy, Vuckovic had an impressive game, scoring 16 points in 21 minutes while shooting 71.4 percent from the field (5-for-7) and went 5-for-5 from the foul line. The Serbian National team defeated Poland, Netherlands and Lativa and advanced to the bronze medal game before falling to Italy, 68-63.

While playing for Romania in the Division B U20 European Championship, Avram averaged 2.5 points per game while grabbing 2.8 rebounds per game. Avram opened up the tournament against Lithuania scoring five points and grabbing five rebounds. Against Israel, the Brasov native scored five points and recorded three rebounds. Romania went 0-9 against the competition in the tournament.
