Owings Powers Tech Baseball Past Purdue, 14-4

ATLANTA – Freshman Lee Hyde pitched five strong innings to earn his first career win and Micah Owings drove in five runs to lead Georgia Tech (10-9) to a 14-4 win over Purdue (3-7) on Tuesday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium. The win snapped the Yellow Jackets’ four-game losing streak.

Hyde (1-1) earned a win in his first career start, working five innings and allowing just two unearned runs. He surrendered four hits and walked one batter while striking out five. Philip Perry worked two shutout innings out of the bullpen and Jason Neighborgall pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Owings went 3-for-4 with a career high five RBI, including a double and home run. Mike Nickeas, Brandon Boggs and Whit Robbins added two hits each.

Tech jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI double from Tyler Greene and a RBI single from Owings.

After the Boilermakers cut the lead to 2-1 with an unearned run in the top of the third, the Yellow Jackets scored six times in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game, 8-1. Tech sent 11 batters to the plate, and the Jackets scored all six runs when seven straight batters reached base after two outs. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer from Owings, his third of the season, and a two-run single from Robbins, while Greene drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Tech added three more runs in the fourth inning, including a pair of RBI doubles from Owings and Robbins, to extend the lead to 11-1. Robbins finished a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI.

After scoring an unearned run in the fifth, the Boilermakers cut the lead to 11-4 in the eighth on a two-run single from Andy Dahl.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, pinch hitter Ryan Stanley belted a three-run home run, his first of his career, to make the score 14-4.

Purdue starter Jesse Krause (0-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.
