Mason Garners Fourth All-America Honor

Dec. 17, 2014

THE FLATS – For the fourth time in less than a week, Georgia Tech senior offensive guard Shaquille Mason has been named an All-American. Mason was named second-team All-America Wednesday by the Football Writers Association of America.

The FWAA honor is Mason’s latest All-America accolade. He has been named first-team All-America by USA TODAY, second team by Sports Illustrated, and third team by the Associated Press. Mason is Georgia Tech’s first FWAA All-American since Calvin Johnson in 2006 and the first offensive lineman since Chris Brown in 2000.

Mason is the 22nd FWAA All-American in program history. Last week Mason became Tech’s first first-team All-American since defensive end Derrick Morgan in 2009.

Mason, a 2013 first-team All-ACC selection, was selected second-team All-ACC by both ACSMA and the league’s head coaches in 2014. He was also an All-ACC selection by ESPN. The Columbia, Tenn., native has been named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week three times this season. Tech’s highest-gradated offensive lineman in every game this season, he has made 37 consecutive starts – the longest streak by any current Yellow Jackets.

The Football Writers Association of America, a non-profit organization founded in 1941, consists of more than 1,400 men and women who cover college football. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include gameday operations, major awards and its annual All-America team. For more information about the FWAA and its award programs, contact Steve Richardson at tiger@fwaa.com or 214-870-6516.

No. 12 Georgia Tech faces No. 7 Mississippi State (10-2) in the 2014 Capital One Orange Bowl on New Year’s Eve in Miami. The game kicks at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN at Sun Life Stadium.
