A WIN WOULD…
– Make Tech 30-11 all-time on opening day
– Give Coach Joseph an 11-1 record for season openers and a perfect 3-0 record in away openers
– Be the 214th win of Coach Joseph’s career, putting her 10 wins shy of becoming the all-time winningest coach in Georgia Tech history
Georgia Tech is 29-11 (.725) all-time on opening day. The Yellow Jackets break an eight year streak of opening up the season at home and travel for their first game of the season for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign. In head coach MaChelle Joseph’s 11 years, Tech is 10-1 in season openers, 8-1 in openers at home and 2-0 on the road. The Yellow Jackets are 22-5 since 1978-79 when opening the season at home, 4-3 when on the road and 2-0 at neutral sites.
NEW SEASON ON DECK
The 2014-15 season marks the 12th under the direction of head coach MaChelle Joseph and the 40th year of Georgia Tech women’s basketball. The Yellow Jackets return six letterwinners and three starters from last year’s squad that recorded the seventh 20 win season and seventh NCAA Tournament appearance under Coach Joseph. Tech welcomes six freshmen to this year’s team that are a part of Prospect Nation’s 11th ranked recruiting class.
The Ramblers played two exhibition games to start off the season, falling to Lewis, 83-61, and defeating John Carroll, 82-53. Simone Law and Taylor Johnson scored in double-figures in both games after missing a majority of 2013-14 with knee injuries. Loyola returns eight letterwinners from last season, including five of the top six leading scorers.
The Yellow Jackets hosted Flagler in an exhibition contest on Nov. 2. Tech rolled to a 102-44 victory behind sophomore Kaela Davis’ 27 points. Freshman Zaire O’Neil recorded a double-double while freshman Antonia Peresson, junior Aaliyah Whiteside, sophomore Katarina Vuckovic and senior Sydney Wallace all scored in double-figures.
Joseph enters her 12th season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets with a career record of 213-134. Joseph is 11 wins away from becoming the all-time winningest coach in Georgia Tech history. Former coach Agnus Berenato is currently the all-time winningest coach with a record of 223-209 in 15 seasons.
Georgia Tech has 588 program wins, putting them 12 wins away from reaching the 600 win milestone.
ON THE WAY TO 1,000
Two Yellow Jackets are closing in on 1,000 career points. Senior Sydney Wallace has 831 career points putting her 169 points shy from becoming the 27th Yellow Jacket to achieve the feat. Sophomore Kaela Davis has 594 career points, which makes her 406 points away from 1,000. Davis has played in 32 career games. The record for the fastest player to reach 1,000 points is 55 games.
Sophomore guard Kaela Davis was selected to the Preseason All-ACC Team by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and the ACC head coaches. Davis was a member of the 2014 All-ACC Second Team and the 2014 All-ACC Freshman Team. Davis set the single season scoring record for a freshman in Georgia Tech history with 594 points last season, which ranks third on GT’s all-time list for points in a single season. Her 594 points also set the ACC freshman scoring record. Davis led all ACC rookies last season with 18.6 points per game and was honored as the ACC Rookie of the Week four times.
The Yellow Jackets return to the Flats on Sunday to host Morgan State at 2 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion. Sunday is Kids Day so all children 18 and under receive free admission and there will be inflatables and a DJ an hour prior to kickoff. The freshman class will be available after the game to sign autographs outside section 111.
