@GT_trackNfield Finishes Day 1 of Penn Relays

April 29, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Georgia Tech track & field squad finished its first of three days of competition at the Penn Relays on Thursday night. The evening consisted primarily of distance events, and the Jackets had some strong performances.

Melissa Fairey led the way for the women, finishing eighth in the 10000m with a time of 35:14.56. Hailey Gollnick also performed well, as she finished 13th in the 3000m Steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:46.94. On the men’s side, Alex Grady finished 28th in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:27.93, while Nahom Solomon finished 32nd in the 5000m with a time of 14:32.94. Matt Munns (14:34.57), Christian Bowles (14:36.33) and Tanner Shaw (14:45.06) had personal bests in the 5000m, as well.

“We had a decent night with some good personal bests from Hailey in the women’s Steeplechase and the trio of Matt, Christian and Tanner in the men’s 5000m,” said head women’s coach Alan Drosky, who also coaches the men’s distance runners. “Nahom was just off his best time ever in the 5000m and Melissa ran a seasonal best in the 10,000m. But overall we lacked a consistency in our efforts. The cold weather was a bit of a challenge, but we should have been able to handle it better and should have produced faster times across the board.”

Friday’s action will begin for the Jackets at 2:45 p.m. with the men’s DMR, and live results can be followed at http://bit.ly/2482ZtJ.
