April 20, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech track and field saw five student-athletes named to the 2017 All-Atlantic Coast Conference men’s and women’s indoor track and field academic teams on Thursday as announced by the league office.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.

Senior Kenya Collins and junior Bailey Weiland earned the conference honor on the women’s team. Collins, a biology major, posted four top-three finishes in the 60m hurdles during the 2016-17 indoor season, including a first-place finish in the season opener at the BSC Indoor Icebreaker. At the 2017 Indoor Track and Field ACC Championships, she finished sixth in the 60m hurdles for All-ACC Second Team honors. Weiland, a business administration major, took sixth in the high jump at the ACC Championships for All-ACC Second Team honors.

Three men were named to the All-ACC Academic Team from Georgia Tech. Freshman Sam Costa, a business administration major, finished first in the 5k at the Orange and Purple Classic and was named ACC Performer of the Week following the performance. Junior Preston Smith majors in business administration and competes in the triple jump for the Yellow Jackets. At the ACC Championships, Smith posted an eighth-place finish. Junior Andreas Ward, majoring in mechanical engineering, took sixth in the 60m hurdles at the ACC Championships for All-ACC Second Team honors.
