Yellow Jackets Advance in Doubles Play at Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

Kelly Anderson and Lyndsay Shosho teamed together to defeat 44th-ranked Cynthya Goulet and Emily Wang of Illinois while Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio downed Stanford’s 35th-ranked duo of Anne Yelsey and Whitney Deason as both Georgia Tech doubles teams reached the quarterfinals of the Qualifying Round at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Tuesday evening.

Anderson and Shosho fought through a tough match to win, 9-8 (3) while Miller and Silverio defeated Yelsey and Deason, 8-6. Anderson and Shosho will face Stanford’s Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette, the No. 1 doubles seed in the tournament, while Miller and Silverio meet UCLA’s Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda, the No. 5 seed.

Earlier in the day, Miller, Anderson and Shosho all fell short of advancing in singles play. Anderson and Shosho participated in their first matches of the tournament after earning byes in the pre-qualifying rounds. Anderson, the nation’s 55th-ranked player, fell to No. 65 Nicole Bouffler of Long Beach State, 6-3, 6-0 in her first round match, while Shosho, ranked No. 46, lost in three sets to Wisconsin’s Katie McGaffigan, ranked the 42nd-best singles player in the nation. Miller, riding a perfect 10-0 record in singles play this fall, dropped her match to No. 44 Gitte Ostermann of Nebraska, 7-5, 6-4.

All three players still qualified for the consolation round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Qualifier, with Anderson winning her first round match, 6-0, 6-0 against 95th-ranked Katharina Winterhalter of Fresno State and Miller defeating No. 93 Hala Sufi of Purdue, 6-3, 6-3. Shosho was eliminated from singles play after falling to Clemson’s 70th-ranked Maria Brito, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Miller will play Michigan’s 57th-ranked Elizabeth Exon while Anderson competes against No. 68 Jennifer Zika of Duke in Wednesday’s singles action.
