Charlottesville, Va. – Juan Spir knocked off the nation’s top-ranked player at the top of the singles lineup, but No. 1 Virginia remained undefeated Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Georgia Tech at the Snyder Tennis Center.

The Cavaliers improved to 18-0 this season and 8-0 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-14 overall and 1-8 in the ACC with one match remaining in the regular season, at Clemson next Friday.

Spir, ranked 68th in the nation, won easily over Alex Domijan, 6-4, 6-1, for his sixth consecutive victory. The last three have come against players ranked No. 25 (Duke’s Fred Saba), No. 73 (Virginia Tech’s Amerigo Contini) and now Domijan. He is 4-4 this spring against ranked players and 8-1 in ACC matches.

“Virginia has a great team,” said Tech coach Kenny Thorne. “I’m very proud of Juan Spir today taking out the number 1 player in the country. I believe it is the first time we have had a singles player beat the number 1 player in the country. Juan is finishing strong.”

The Cavaliers played like the nation’s top-ranked team on all the other courts, however. They won the doubles point with and 8-2 victory on court 1, where No. 2 Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger defeated No. 67 Spir and Eduardo Segura, and 8-1 at No. 3, where No. 42 Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen defeated Colin Edwards and Anish Sharma.

Virginia scored straight-set victories in four of the six singles matches, where the Cavs have five players ranked among the nation’s top 50. The exception came at No. 4 where Segura retired against No. 48 Ryan Shane.

Styslinger, ranked No. 22, downed Sharma, 6-1, 6-1, at court 5, and after the Spir victory, the Cavs scored the clinching point at court 3 with No. 37 Mitchell Frank’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Nathan Rakitt.
