Tech Has Tough Day at Bulldog Scramble

Nov. 6, 2010

Athens, Ga. – Dean O’Brien and Magin Ortiga each split two matches Friday, but those were the only two wins for Georgia Tech in 10 singles matches on the second day of the Bulldog Scramble tennis tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

In the round-robin format, the Yellow Jackets will face players from Georgia, Georgia State and North Carolina in singles and doubles sessions throughout the weekend.

O’Brien, a senior from Benmore, South Africa, defeated Georgia’s Hernus Pieters, 6-3, 6-2, but lost to the Bulldogs Ignacio Tobaoda in straight sets later in the day. Ortiga, a sophomore from Cartigina, Colombia, beat Cameron Ahari of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-3, and took 14th-eanked Javier Garrapiz of Georgia to three sets before falling.

Ryan Smith and Eliot Potvin each lost twice Saturday, while Miguel Muguruza dropped his only match.

In doubles action, Potvin and O’Brien took Georgia’s Garrapiz and Pieters to the limit, losing 9-8 in a tiebreaker.

Play continues at 10 a.m. Sunday.
