THE FLATS – Andrew Li, a Hong Kong native who has been ranked as high as No. 180 among juniors internationally, has signed a letter of intent to play tennis at Georgia Tech, head coach Kenny Thorne announced Thursday.
The right-handed Li is 24-16 in singles and 73-50 for his junior career internationally, 18-14 and 54-46 in doubles. He made the finals of a Grade 4 ITF event in Thailand earlier this month, defeating two players ranked in the top 80, as well as a Grade 4 event in China early in 2014. He won the doubles title in the China event.
“We are excited to have Andrew join our Tech family,” said Thorne. “He is very good academically and has had extensive experience and success on the world junior tennis circuit. Since I have coached, we haven’t had a player as a member of our team that resides in Asia. Asia is becoming more prominent on the world tennis scene so we are excited to have Andrew represent us here and there. We have most of our players from Georgia and the USA so it is great to have some international experience. Andrew will contribute to and fit in well with our already solid team.”
A participant in the 2014 Asian Games for China, he holds a current international ranking of No. 221.
Since his signing. Li earned his first Hong Kong Open single championship on Nov. 30, defeating former Duke player Philip King, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, in the quarter- final and Pepperdine alumnus David Sofaer (ATP rank No. 909), 6-3, 7-6 in the final.
