ATLANTA – Garrett Gordon, ranked No. 2 among 2012 seniors in the state of Georgia and 32nd nationally, signed a letter-of-intent to play tennis at Georgia Tech during the recently-completed early signing period, head coach Kenny Thorne announced Friday.
“I know Garrett is going to have a great college tennis career,” said Thorne. “We definitely want our local talent to come to Georgia Tech, and Garrett is definitely a top player in Georgia as well as a top player in the nation. He understands the advantages that Georgia Tech offers combining excellent academics and athletics. He will excel in both which will continue our great tradition of true student-athletes. We are extremely excited to have him as a major part of our program.”
A senior at Laurel Springs School in Marietta, Ga., Gordon has been ranked as high at 17th in the nation in 2011, and currently stands 32nd by Tennis Recruiting Network, posting a 23-17 overall record and a 6-6 mark against “Blue-Chip” players, according to the site.
Before the USTA Boys 18 Super Nationals at Kalamazoo, Gordon committed to Georgia Tech. He turned in his best performance this year in the biggest national tournament of the year in Kalamazoo, Mich., where he defeated two blue-chip recruits in Jeremy Efferding (now at Texas A&M) and Jordan Daigle (ranked No. 16 in the class of 2013). He lost to University of Oklahoma freshman Dane Webb 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 32.
