Men’s Tennis Falls at Florida in NCAA Second Round

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 19th-ranked Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (18-8) fell in a NCAA second round match at No. 15 Florida on Saturday. The Gators defeated the Yellow Jackets 4-0 to secure a spot in the round of 16 in Athens, Ga. Junior Christopher Eubanks will head to Athens to represent Tech in the NCAA Singles Championships, which run May 24-29.

DOUBLES ACTION: Florida got on the board early taking the doubles point with victories from the top two spots despite a hard fought effort from the Jackets. With all matches tied at 4-3, Elliott Orkin and Maxx Lipman went up 5-3 on court two and took the first doubles match off the courts, 6-3. Turning to court one, the second-ranked duo of Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over No. 32 Eubanks/Carlos Benito.

SINGLES PLAY: The Gators took five of six first sets in singles play with Eubanks grabbing the only first set by a Jacket in a tiebreak at No. 1. First off the courts was court two where No. 85 Orkin defeated No. 92 Andrew Li, 6-2, 6-2, to give the home squad a 2-0 advantage.

The Gators went up 3-0 with Chase Blanco winning 6-4, 6-1 on court three over Benito. Florida clinched the match from the five seed as No. 123 Ingildsen defeated Daniel Yun, 6-1, 7-5.

QUOTABLE: “Florida played well in doubles and we did not play bad. Our guys played to win but got outplayed. That momentum carried into singles and we were constantly fighting from behind. Our guys made several pushes and they responded well. We never gave in. Credit to Florida and their coaches for doing a great job of keeping on us because our guys don’t get discouraged easily. We pushed them but they were the better team today. It was a very good season for our guys and they deserve a lot of credit. It was an honor to coach them.” – Head Coach Kenny Thorne
