HELMET STICKERS TO HONOR 1917 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
- The Yellow Jackets will wear special stickers on their helmets for Saturday’s homecoming game to honor Georgia Tech’s 1917 national championship team.
- Georgia Tech posted a perfect 9-0 record in 1917, en route to the first of the Institute’s four national titles.
- Tech was the unanimous national champion, one of only three teams during a 50-year span from 1893-1942 to win college football’s national title in unanimous fashion (joining Yale’s 1907 and 1909 squads).
- The “Golden Tornado” (as the team was dubbed by sportswriters) outscored its opponents by a total of 491-17. The Golden Tornado recorded seven shutouts in nine games and averaged 54.6 points per game for the season (including 72.0 ppg over the final five games of the campaign).
- The team featured three future College Football Hall of Famers: head coach John Heisman, halfback/tackle Joe Guyon and halfback Everett Strupper.
- Georgia Tech’s 1917 squad is widely regarded as the greatest team of Heisman’s legendary coaching career and was long-considered to be the “greatest football team that the South has ever produced.”
- Only one of the nine schools on Georgia Tech’s 1917 schedule also appears on the Yellow Jackets’ 2017 slate — Saturday’s homecoming opponent, Wake Forest. In the second game of a season-opening doubleheader on Sept. 29, 1917, Tech beat Wake, 33-0 (the Golden Tornado blanked Furman, 25-0, in the first game of the twinbill).

REMINDER: Georgia Tech athletics has adopted a new policy of magnetic wanding at all entry gates at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Fans are urged to give themselves extra time to get into the stadium. Bobby Dodd Stadium gates open 90 minutes prior to kickoff, so entering early is a great way to avoid the spikes generally seen closer to game time.
Additionally, fans are also asked to please enter the stadium at the gate closest to their seats. Data from the Sept. 9 home opener versus Jacksonville State showed that more than half of the 50,000-plus fans in attendance entered the stadium at four of the stadium’s 10 gates: Gates 4 and 7 (Callaway Plaza), Gate 9 (Techwood Drive) and Gate 10 (North Avenue).
