ATLANTA AP (September 16) – George Godsey threw for a career-high three touchdowns and linebacker Daryl Smith recovered two fumbles as Georgia Tech beat Navy 40-13 on Saturday.

Godsey, who has shared time at quarterback with Andy Hall and Jermaine Crenshaw this season, played into the fourth quarter and completed 10 of 19 passes for 166 yards.

Two of the scores went to Will Glover, and Godsey also threw a 50-yard TD to Kelly Campbell in the third quarter.

Godsey’s brother, Gary, started at quarterback Saturday for Notre Dame, leading the Irish to 23-21 victory over Purdue.

Raheem Lambert rushed for 118 yards for the Midshipmen (0-2), but the Yellow Jackets (2-1) held him to just 25 yards in the second half.

Godsey’s scoring pass to Campbell 3 minutes into the second half gave Georgia Tech a 20-6 lead, and just five plays into Navy’s ensuing possession, defensive end Greg Gathers returned a fumble 6 yards for a 27-6 Yellow Jacket advantage.

Navy’s Brian Broadwater completed 23 of 38 passes for 165 yards. The Midshipmen’s only points of the second half came when wide receiver Billy Hubbard took a lateral and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Gene Reese, cutting the lead to 27-13.

Godsey’s 10-yard touchdown TD pass to Glover stretched the lead to 34-13, and backup tailback Sidney Ford scored from 1 yard out after a Navy fumble late in the fourth quarter.

Tailbacks Joe Burns and Sidney Ford combined for 114 yards on the ground for Tech, who was outgained 331-304 in total offense. Navy also had nearly an 11-minute advantage in time of possession.

The teams traded field goals in the first quarter, with the Midshipmen’s set up by an onside kick on the opening kickoff. The Yellow Jackets took a 6-3 lead on Luke Manget’s 26-yard field goal on their first possession of the second quarter.

Godsey threw an 11-yard TD to Glover with 57 seconds left in the opening half, completing a 14-play, 57-yard drive. Navy had enough time left for a 56-yard drive that culminated in David Hills’ 41-yard field goal.
