THE FLATS – Georgia Tech football’s KeShun Freeman has been named to the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the American Football Coaches Association announced on Thursday.
For 25 years, the AFCA Good Works team has recognized student-athletes that demonstrate the award’s mission that “good works” extend beyond the football field by balancing academics with athletics while donating their limited free time and energy to helping others. The 25-member 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which includes 12 FBS student-athletes, 12 representatives from NCAA Division I FCS, Division II, Division III and the NAIA and an honorary head coach, was selected from a pool of 165 nominees. Freeman and the rest of the Good Works Team will be honored during the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 in New Orleans.
Freeman, a junior defensive end, is involved in several community service projects in Atlanta and beyond. His efforts include serving as an active volunteer for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he takes part in the For the Kids Dance Marathon and creates and delivers Valentines for hospitalized children.
His other service initiatives have included traveling with teammates to the Dominican Republic on behalf of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to build houses for local families, serving as a volunteer counselor at Atlanta’s Chick-Fil-A Youth Football Camp, acting as a Girls on the Run race volunteer and organizing fellow student-athletes to participate in the opening ceremony of the Georgia Special Olympics Winter Games.
Freeman’s service to the community and desire to help children is inspired by his brother, Landon, whose battle with health issues was chronicled by ESPN in 2015. Landon’s inspiration has also led KeShun, a chemistry major, to aspire for a career in pediatric anesthesiology after his football-playing days are over.
On the field, Freeman has started 26 consecutive games at defensive end for the Yellow Jackets, including both contests this season. After recording 44 total tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks as a sophomore last season, he has made three stops in two games this year. He was a consensus freshman all-American in 2014 after leading Georgia Tech with 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Fans can help Freeman be named captain of the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team by voting for him at espn.com/Allstate. Voting is open through Nov. 23. The team captain will be recognized during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show in December.
