ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Mario West used a between-the-legs slam for a perfect score of 60 in the final round to capture the title Thursday night in The 19th Annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at the Georgia State University Sports Arena.
West, a 6-5 guard from Douglasville, Ga., defeated Brent Petway, a 6-8 forward from Griffin, Ga., who recently completed his senior year at Michigan. Petway led after the first round. West was fourth after the first round, barely making the cut, then moved into second place after round two to reach the finals.
After the contest, West gave credit to former teammate Ismai’l Muhammad, arguably the best dunk artist in Tech history. West was supported at the Slam Dunk Championship by all of his Tech teammates and coaches.
West recently completed his four-year career at Georgia Tech, playing in more than 100 games after joining the team as a walk-on and earning a reputation as one of the top defenders in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Management last May and has been working on a second degree in Economics.
