THE BASICS:
• Brandon Gold scored from first on an error in the bottom of the 12th inning as Georgia Tech survived Ohio, 7-6, on a foggy Tuesday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.
• Zac Ryan tossed four scoreless innings of relief for the Yellow Jackets to earn the victory.
• Tech improved to 9-3 overall with its fourth straight victory, while the Bobcats fell to 6-4.
• It was the Yellow Jackets’ first extra-inning game this season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
• Tech opened up a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, and after Ohio scored twice in the top of the fifth, the Jackets tacked on three more in the bottom half to open a 6-2 advantage.
• Ohio struck for four runs in the seventh and the game remain tied until the 12th.
• Gold opened the 12th inning with a lead-off single up middle. In the next at bat, Wade Bailey dropped a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by the pitcher, Jake Miller. He air-mailed his throw to second into center field and Gold was able to sprint home for the winning run.
• It was Tech’s second walk-off win this season.
• Gold finished 3-for-6 and provided a two-run single in the fifth inning.
• Thomas Smith and Connor Justus each had two-hit games, while A.J. Murray and Kel Johnson each scored twice.
• Murray extended his hitting streak to six games and his reached-base streak to all 12 games with a fourth-inning single.
• Ryan entered the game to start the ninth inning and retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced over four dominant innings of relief with three strikeouts. He earned the win (2-0).
• Mitch Longo was 5-for-5 and scored twice to pace the Bobcats, while Cody Gaertner had three hits, including a three-run double in the seventh that tied the game at 6-6.
• Tech had chances late in the game to avoid extra innings, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth and a runner in scoring position in the ninth. Tech also left the bases loaded in the 11th.
• Ohio used 10 pitchers in the game and Miller tossed the final three innings, absorbing the tough-luck loss (1-1).
QUOTEABLE:
“We let them back in the game, but Zac Ryan gave us a chance to win. We played well defensively all night and CJ (Connor Justus) made a phenomenal play in the 12th inning to basically take a hit away. It was an ugly way to win for sure, but we’ll take. Our guys hung in there, we kept getting chances, but we just couldn’t cash in.”
